An influential
British philosopher of
language,
mathematics and
metaphysics. Important
books include
Truth and Other Enigmas and
The Seas of Language. He is himself heavily influenced in some writings by
Wittgenstein and
Frege.
One famous aspect of Dummett's philosophy is his programme of antirealism: i.e. the idea that there are no truths in the world which transcend our capacity to recognise them as true. He has been associated with intuitionism and verificationism as well.
Do not confuse him, as I once did, with Daniel Dennett, a completely different important philosopher.
