An easy appetizer or snack that can be made days ahead of time, these pecans are really lovely, especially as holiday food. The light crunchy glaze is sweet and peppery; I think they have a much more complex and interesting taste than straight-up salted nuts. And because the spices are trapped in the glaze, they don't shake off, nor do they leave anything on your hands.

Please note that the recipe below only makes 1.5 cups of nuts. They're definitely worth the trouble of making them, but I always double the recipe - it's no more mess, and very little extra effort. (edit: about the mess. Your pans are going to look awful, but the goop melts easily with hot water.)

Stored in a airtight container, these keep nicely for at least a few days (mine have never gone uneaten longer than that) - so a lot of people are getting jars full of these this Christmas. Pecans are stupid expensive but it still works out to be a pretty cheap gift, easy and quick to make, and I'm sure it will…

Photo here!

omg you guys. I promise this is easy. And so very good. I've never been fond of "variant" pumpkin pie recipes because they usually fuck up the whole concept with, I don't know, cottage cheese or some crap. This one, though, is lovely. It's very similar in flavor to standard pumpkin pie, but has a much lighter and creamier texture, almost like a mousse. It's not your usual bright-orange dense-ass triangle. There are no weird ingredients here - the fluffiness is achieved through whipped egg whites. The other difference is the marvelous walnut-streusel topping, which please don't skip.

for the pie:
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree (NOT the already-spiced kind. Just pure pumpkin.)
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
2 egg yolks
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 egg…

"I have been reading an old classic author
lately," said he, "and met with a story that strangely interested me.
Possibly you may remember it. It is of an Indian prince, who
sent a beautiful woman as a present to Alexander the Great. She was
as lovely as the dawn and gorgeous as the sunset; but what especially
distinguished her was a certain rich perfume in her breath--richer
than a garden of Persian roses. Alexander, as was natural to a
youthful conqueror, fell in love at first sight with this magnificent
stranger; but a certain sage physician, happening to be present,

A few years ago I had the very half-baked idea of using E2 as a forum for exchanging used books. It kind of worked for a while, but then it got too big, too out of control, and frankly too boring to manage. I am happy to report someone else is doing a much better job with a similar idea.

BookMooch.com is sort of a cross between the ill-fated book lotto and BookCrossing. Like BookCrossing, BookMooch enables you to get rid of unwanted books and pick up interesting "new" ones, and like the book lotto, it lets you choose among titles. And it has gazillions.

What I like best about the site is that reciprocal trades aren't necessary. BookMooch runs on a point system, where points are awarded for building an inventory of books to give away (this means you must first offer books before asking for others), and for mailing those books to other users who request them. Earn a point by mailing user A a book, spend that point by requesting a book from…
