Chaumes is one of the most popular cheeses in its native France. As a table cheese it is extremely common, and is also a favourite for grilling purposes.

The cheese features a smooth and supple consistent inner pate, protected by a cheerful and bright orange rind. The flavour is mild but also nutty and meaty. The fat content is a reasonably high 50%. The famous manufacturer Fromageries des Chaumes is based in the capital of Paris
