The most common type of pencil (at least in the U.S.) -- it has a medium hard and dark lead (so called even though it's graphite) and is required for taking standardized tests where you have to fill in the bubbles on the answer sheet for machine grading. Apparently the machines can't see the marks from any other number of lead all that well.
