Eudora Welty was fond of using this phrase to describe her writing as well as that of other Southern writers. Her theory was that most of this literature represented the South's collective experience, all the way from the Depression to present times. In particular, Welty's own writing reveals an allegiance to agrarian values. In her mind, a sense of place ultimately meant a sense of how to live your life.
