Strange, but true:
One punishment for an
adulterous wife in medieval France was to make her chase a
chicken through town
naked.
My guess was that it was a play on words. She was always chasing "
cock"..so...they humiliated her by making
her do it literally in public. I think that's a pretty lenient
punishment though.
