Abilene, also known as Internet2, is a high performance research network connecting institutions of higher-learning and research all over the world. It was created to get around the congestion and unreliability of Internet. It comes in handy when you work at a University as a sysadmin and need to download the latest Linux distribution; just find a mirror at another University and you're practically guaranteed >10 megabit transfer rates. University jobs are cool.
