Term first coined by Aolefi Kete Asante in 1976.
According to the Encyclopedia Africans, the term means "rediscovering African and African American acheivement; restoring Africa's place in history; and establishing it's importance on par with European history and culture."
It is also the study of African and African American culture from a non-European perspective.
