Reynolds, (born 1935) became Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland in 1992, succeeding Charles Haughey as leader of the Fianna Fail party. He remained in office until 1994 as head of a coalition between Fianna Fail and Labour. He was forced to resign when it emerged that he has misled the Dáil (parliament) over a scandal involving a child-abusing priest whose prosecution had been deliberately delayed by a civil servant. Reynolds takes credit for kick-starting the peace process in Northern Ireland, along with John Major, with the Downing Street Declaration.
