Andy Hampsten

Andy Hampsten was, for a while, the "other" American cyclist.

While Greg LeMond was out in front, little Andy was always waiting in the wings for his chance. But chances don't come very often for climbing specialists like Andy. He couldn't quite muster the raw power it takes to win big races like the Tour De France, even though he won stages in them.

An exception to this was the in the Giro d'Italia, when in a freak mountain snowstorm he broke away and gained a 30 minute lead (which is huge), which was enough to win him the overall race later on.

Unquestionably a good cyclist, but not one of the greats.
