Asiana was started in 1988 by chaebol Kumho Group as a domestic competitor for South Korea's major airline, Korean Air. The start-up did so well that in 1990, they began operations to Japan, and in 1991, the United States. They are now capitalized at around $700 million, and have a fairly large international route network. Recently, Asiana signed a code share agreement with American Airlines to build their share in the trans-Pacific market.
