This is a required subject here in Australia. I believe this is because of our last PM, who thought that it would be a good thing if some of the people graduating from school knew a little about Australia. Its a high school subject, and we all know how much high school sucks.
Don't get me wrong, I'm as patriotic about Australia as the next person. "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!" Nevertheless, as a student of this horrible subject I need to take a moment to explain to the world at large why no sane person who has to study this required subject enjoys it.
It is boring.
Very, very boring. So boring that I discussed various ways to kill oneself with the person next to me in order to entertain myself. You walk into class and sit down and listen to the teacher talk about stuff. And then you get a couple sheets with questions and you have to answer in "full sentences please" and man, it is so boring.
We are teenagers. That is why we are in high school. We are not allowed to leave it until we are 16. And Australian Studies is a boring subject, boring, and compulsory. If we didn't have to do it, no one would. Maths, English, the sciences, they are all necessary evils. Without them many options for our "glorious future", yet another thing many teachers never tire of speaking about, close. They are horrible, soul-crushing subjects. But Australian studies is nothing short of pure life-destroying, imagination-sucking, mind-numbing boringness.
And yet we must learn about the very short history of Australia and the various teachers for this subject think that its the best thing since... the last best thing in teaching, whatever that is.
But we hate it. Hate it with everything we have.
If you teach this subject, may God be with you, because unless you are a fantastic teacher it will suck.
