A Latin American nation that's essentially ruled by a US corporation, often assisted by Uncle Sam. "Banana" came from United Brands (of Chiquita Banana fame), UB called the shots in matters pertaining to their business interests, and some lucre would trickle down into the pockets of the nominal political leadership of the land (often a dictator-puppet and his family). Nowadays, these nations are democracies (on paper, anyway), and corporations must share power. With other corporations.

Banana Republic originally sold safari-inspired clothing after its inception in 1978. In 1983 Banana Republic was bought by Gap Inc. and since then it has focused on the upscale 20 to 30-something market. Currently the brand is known for modern, stylish (not to mention pricey) apparel and personal care products for men and women.
