To die in a fight, or possibly just to suffer a severe setback of some sort. The earliest usage I can find reference to is in Homer's Iliad.

May his fellow warriors... fall around him to the earth and bite the dust.

Most famous for it's appearance in Queen's Another One Bites the Dust.
