Formed by Harry Pace in 1921, Black Swan was the first black owned record company. It specialized in blues music, recorded primarily for a Black audience. Named for nineteenth century opera singer Elizabeth Greenfield who was known as the "black swan." One of it's early successes was the release of "Down Home Blues" by Ethel Waters.
