Boston Red Stockings

In 1876, the National League was born. Their was 8 teams. Teams included the: Boston Red Stockings, Chicago White Stockings, Cincinnati Red Stockings, Hartford Dark Blues, Louisville Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics, and St. Louis Brown Stockings.

Of course, as many of you do not know, the Atlanta Braves is the current name for the then Boston Red Stockings. Currently, the Braves is in the National League. In 1876, there was only 1 league, and that was the Nation League. 70 games were played by the Red Stockings that season, instead of the 162-game season that is in place today. In the 1876 season, they had a record of 39-31 (.557), placing them in fourth place. They played their home games at South End Grounds I.

Some of the players the played for this ballclub were Joe Borden and Foghorn Bradley, who both were pitchers. Lew Brown, believed to be the youngest player on the team, played the position of catcher. Harry Schafer and Frank Whitney both played in the infield.
