Bringing Out the Dead

1999 film by Martin Scorcese, starring Nicholas Cage and John Goodman who play two hyper-stressed paramedics. This was one of the best films I've seen in a long time. Very darkly humorous, and not afraid to look at difficult things, as many films are afraid to do today.

Bringing Out The Dead is a book by Joe Connelly, who is a former paramedic. While the book has been overshadowed by the Martin Scorcese movie (starring Nicholas Cage), the book itself was very well written. It details three days in the life of a stressed paramedic, who is combating his own personal demons, and trying to reconcile himself for accidently killing a young girl by intubating her stomach instead of lungs. The book conveys a sense of intensity which is never lost as the novel progresses.

The movie, I think was a very accurate vision of the novel, and one of the few movies that does justice to the book which served as it's base. The script was written by Paul Schrader.
