The British Book Award for Newcomer of the Year which is currently
sponsored by Waterstone's should be fairly self-explanatory, and
generally won by whatever new author has caught the judges eyes that
year. Incidentally Daisy & Tom is a children's department store (and
part of the same group as the Early Learning Centre) which presumably
sells books; Borders UK is the offshoot of the US Borders chain of
bookstores which had just started life in Britain.
