He's cute, he want's to talk, she pretends he is just killing time. He offers to help, she brushes him away and answers his questions about the animals.
"That one was spayed, that one had lumps removed, that one is going in this afternoon for knee surgery." She folds clothes and tries to ignore his cuteness and smile and conversation. She is going to be here for three hours more. She would never see him again. He is probably not her type. He probably isn't really that nice. He is probably arrogant. He is probably not interested.
Back up a few days. Tuesday.
"Hi, you've met my son, Chris*." Said the vet, his mother, to her. Chris smiled at her and she noticed his eyes and face and how tall he was.
"No, hi."
"Chris is studying vet at that new course!"
"Hi Chris," said a nurse and suddenly Chris was gone and nothing had happened. But she had seen him. And she liked what she saw.
Wednesday.
"I brought your lunch."
"That's why I love you." Mother to son and she stood by keeping out of the way.
"I'll be back, tell her about vet school." She leaves and he smiles.
"It's great." So great it gets two thumbs up and a massive smile. She loves him already. They talk. He talks most, but she smiles and nods and enjoys herself. She feels awkward, the moment seems surreal. He's nice, talks easily, to her, not anywhere else. He seems annoyed when his mother comes back.
"Now you're just showing off. Go away." The mother gets a kiss on the cheek. She smiles at him as he leaves and he smiles at her as he leaves. They smile at each other.
"See you."
"Yeah, see you."
Lunchtime. He's gone, but he's in the room, in the conversation.
"His voice went very deep when he was talking to you." She blushes and bends to the newspaper. "Trying to impress you." She feels awkward but smiles and listens about him.
Her friends tell her she's pretty but she doesn't believe them. Did he think so too? Did he notice?
Friday. Today. Last day.
He's there, waiting for the poor puppycastration to finish. He talks to her while he waits. She wants to say 'kiss me, kiss me here and now,' but of course she couldn't. Life isn't like that.
Surgery is over, he's gone, then suddenly he's saying goodbye forever, she'll never see him again and time has run out. She had chances over and over again. She had chances. The chances were not taken.
*The name was not changed. Chris, if you're there, I wish had taken that chance to get to know you.
