Chess"es (?), n. pl. [Cf. F. chassis a framework of carpenty.] Mil.

The platforms, consisting of two or more planks doweled together, for the flooring of a temporary military bridge.

A singular, chess, is sometimes used. "Each chess consists of three planks." Farrow.
