Most cases of Plasmodium falciparum malaria are chloroquine resistant, particularly in endemic areas like Papua New Guinea. So instead, we rely on good ol' quinine for these cases, usually in combination with one or two other anti-malarials.
And if you couldn't guess it from the name, chloroquine is a chlorinated form of quinine - the stuff found in your Gin and Tonic. |
