Computer adaptive testing is a form of assessment most often used in licensure and certification situations. Traditional paper-and-pencil tests present questions in a linear fashion to an examinee. Computer adaptive tests create a test from a collection of questions (item bank) and estimate the relative strengths and weaknesses of the examinee to determine the difficulty of subsequent questions. Computer adaptive tests result in a better measurement of a particular examinee's ability areas through reduced standard errors and greater precision.
