Contrary motion

This is a musical effect caused by two melodic lines moving in opposite directions. On a piano for example, you can play a scale moving upwards with the right hand, and in the left hand the scale will be moving downwards. This can be heard in throughout many orchestrations where the tune will be played by one section of the orchestra whilst the other section can play the inverted tune.
