Do a good turn daily

The Boy Scout slogan. Different than the Boy Scout motto, Be Prepared! to "do a good turn daily" meant to do something positive, at least once to offset all the awful shit you did the rest of the day. This is embodied in popular culture by the image of helping a little old lady across the street.

It probably didn't mean anything you would do while driving, since most Boy Scouts are not of legal driving age.

It surely does not mean "turn a good trick daily." That's something else entirely.

The 1927 edition of the Boy Scouts of America Handbook for Boys (from the Library in section 32 of the Factvault) includes this:
SOME MODERN "GOOD TURNS"
Put out forest fire.
Kept a cat from killing a chicken.
Took live wire to curb.
Dug post holes for man next door.
Carried mail to prisoner.
Drove a car to a funeral for a lady.
Cleaned off cemetery lot for funeral.
Wheeled a crippled person.
Cooked for a sick person.
Gave water to a crippled dog.
Put water in chicken coop at store.
Fixed a little boy's tricycle.
Helped boy look for his dog.
Stopped fight in school yard.
Helped an old lady with her bundles.
Helped put out a burning field.
Rendered first aid to a burned child.
Moved a sewer pipe out of the road.
Helped the cook pick a chicken.
Took in some beds for an old woman.
Cranked car for one-armed man.
Helped a paralyzed man fix his papers.
Distributed cards for bible class
Helped a horse get up that had fallen.
Helped grocer recover spilled fruit.
Carried a crippled boy's book for him.
Got ball out of a tree for a boy.
Took small child across three streets.
I am sure all of the best Boy Scouts lived in towns full of disabled people, hapless children, barnyard mayhem, helpless old women, and conflagrations aplenty so they could sleep at night knowing they had fulfilled their good turn requirements.
