The Fifties, or the
US prior to its
60s upheavals;
a.k.a. "Ozzie & Harriet", after another top TV show of the era. The years of the
television-idealized
American nuclear family (led by a
breadwinner and his
housewife) - a "world" referenced when "
family values" is invoked, a lost
utopia we must regain. Of course, there was lots of
drug use, underage drinking,
premarital sex, and the like; today's lack of
shotgun weddings only makes it seem like teen pregnancy is a modernist ill.
