Dunderberg Mountain is located about 35 miles north of New York City, directly across the Hudson River from Peekskill, New York. Washington Irving wrote tales of goblins that lived between Dunderberg Mountain and Pollopel Island who tormented sailors on the river. Legend has it that one of Captain Kidd's pirate ships sank in a gale at the foot of the mountain, but no sunken treasure has ever been found.
The mountain was also the site of the Dunderberg Spiral Railway, which was partially constructed between 1890 and 1891, but never completed. Today, Dunderberg Mountain is a popular hiking destination, offering scenic views of the Hudson. |
