Founded by Eating Disorders Awareness & Prevention (www.edap.org, now defunct), Eating Disorders Awareness Week is now sponsored by the National Eating Disorders Association, a coalition of EDAP and the American Anorexia Bulimia Association (AABA). The week chosen in 2002 was February 24th-March 3rd. During this week, some newspapers featured articles focusing on eating disorders, as well as a few television and radio stations which issued public service announcements. For the sixth year in a row, the National Eating Disorders Screening Program sampled both males and females on college campuses and in high schools for incidence of this disease as well as offering help and education.
A few in support of this week would wear ribbons, make speeches, and generally promote awareness, while most afflicted wore a simple lilac ribbon or said nothing at all. This best reflects the nature of eating disorders in society today - talked about much, but many are still ashamed - showing the exact reason for this week.
