The song revolves around Augusto Pinochet's bloody military coup of the Chilean government in 1973. Pinochet overthrew and killed the democratically elected socialist president Salvador Allende and later killed or tortured as many as 80,000 Chileans.
Shortly after the album's release in 1998, Pinochet was facing extradition from England to Spain where he was to be charged with crimes against humanity. Drugstore was seen at the protest lines when Britian's 12 law lords overturned the High Court's decision to reject Pinochet's plea for immunity, boosting the song's popularity even more.
