| A book in the Cambridge History of Science Series, by P. M. Harman. It traces the developments in physical theory during the 19th century and shows how the advances made in physics during this period contributed to the decline of the mechanical worldview.
For an academic monograph, the book is fairly readable. If you're not interested in the minutiae of the history of science, it's going to pretty much bore you out of your mind. It made a good textbook, anyway.
