Evil-merodach, (servant or fool of Marduk), is the name given in the Hebrew Bible to Babylonian ruler Amel-Marduk. There are few references in written record of this ruler and no personal or historical inscriptions to serve as physical evidence of his reign. He was the son and successor of Nebuchadnezzar, a reign he enjoyed for but 2 short years (from 561-560 BC). It must however be noted that other sources hold the reign of Evil-merodach to have lasted from 12 to 18 years. It was during his reign that Jehoiachin, king of Judah, was released from his 37 year captivity. He was given raiment, food, and a place at the king's table for all the days of his life. Evil-marodach fell to the machinations of his brother-in-law Nergal-sharezer, (also called Neriglissar), who murdered, then succeeded him on the throne of Babylon.
