In Anne McCaffrey's Pern books, Faranth is a gold (and thus fertile female) in the first round of genetically engineered dragons designed to fight thread, which are nasty wigglies that fall from the sky and eat through everything. Faranth is the largest of that clutch, and becomes the senior queen in the first Weyr on pern. Her rider is Sorka.
