There existed no French presidency from the years 1940 to 1947. Legislation enacted on 10 July 1940 declared the end of the Third Republic and giving all powers of the State to Marshall Pétain, so that he might "frame and promulgate" a new French constitution (1).

After the allied liberation of France, a provisional government was established. Under this government, France was led by General Charles de Gaulle (3 June 1944 - 27 January 1946), then by Félix Gouin (27 January 1946 - 24 June 1946), and finally Georges Bidault (24 June 1946 - 18 December 1946).

The Third Republic began after the fall of Napoleon III (Louis Napoleon) in 1870 and existed until the 1940 German Occupation.

Second Republic

- Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. Term : 1848 - 1851

The Second Republic began in February 1848, after the abdication of the "Citizen King", Louis Phillippe. In the beginning, the new republic was governed by a committee of 10 men.

One of these, Louis Blanc, was in favor was of a national workshop to provide low-wage jobs to 130 000 unemployed souls. In June of 1848, the government dropped the program. The rest of the month saw violent rioting of the re-unemployed workers, riots which killed and injured more than 10 000 people. In a national election following the riots, Louis Napoleon, nephew of the Emperor Napoleon, was elected to the Presidency of the Second Republic. Not long after that, Napoleon abolished the earlier governing committee and set up a dictatorship. This action was supported by the populace in an 1852 election, which gave Louis Napoleon the title of Emperor Napoleon the Third.
