I like the curves far better

Curves in the road are much easier to drive than straight stretches while drunk. Or while I'm drunk. One is probably more true than the other, but I'm unsure because I've only been me my whole life and never anyone else. Anyway..

Curves are sensual, slow, more accomodating to my needs as a drunkard to have things flow rather than be abrupt and transistion slowly instead of persisting in some dull pattern, or worse, altering quickly and forcing me to make use of reflexive parts of my brain that are largely useless while I'm inebriated.

I've been told (though not by officers of the law) that I am a remarkably good drunk driver. I try to ignore this and when drunk, if I must drive, to drive where I must do so at a speed of less than 25 miles per hour. But if this observation were true, it would owe much to the fact that my drive home is smooth without being uninteresting enough to let me slide into complacency. Due to the aforementioned curves.
Lord, of the things here I'm most ashamed of.. Don't you worry, I got mine. I guess we all had to be young and stupid at some point.

Curvy roads and highways have been found in studies to be safer than straight ones. As an episode of Modern Marvels made the point, when the postwar United States attempted to mimic the German Autobahn by making the US highway system, in hindsight the approach of plowing through everything that was in the way of the freeway construction resulted in long, flat, straight stretches of road where drivers could become inattentive, distracted, and were more likely to fall asleep. In contrast, Germany made the Autobahn flow with the lay of the land rather than fight it, resulting in roads that were both scenic and conducive to alert driving.

Maintenance on the Autobahn is more stringent than in the US. Entire sections are replaced when cracks appear, rather than simple patches. Additionally, the roads are twice as thick as their US counterparts.

Germans also follow a concept known as "Rechtsfahren," which translates to "drive right", meaning slower traffic should (and in fact must, if I recall German traffic law correctly from my high school German class) stay to the right to allow faster traffic to pass on the left. You must move right if somebody wishes to go faster than you, and you may not pass on the right at all.

Meanwhile, as a firefighter, I've dealt with numerous motor vehicle accidents caused by drivers having fallen asleep at the wheel while cruising on one of our many straightaways here in Texas. Most of them categorically deny having fallen asleep, but a conscious or sober person doesn't just veer off the road or into oncoming traffic for no reason. They also don't just happen to miss the bridge they were about to drive over at 70 miles per hour.

When it comes down to it, I like the curves of the Autobahn far better than the straightaways of I-40 or I-5.

I keep still,
enjoying the moment,
drinking it in
like the glasses I pour down my ever-parched throat.
I smile.
He laughs about my happiness, and
we stare at each other until I get embarrassed all over again.


He has always made me beautiful.
He has waged war on my confidence.
But when I am here
with the curve of his smile
and the curve of my hip
all I can see is sunlight and now.

I had given up on enjoying myself
when he had given up on enjoying my company.

And I pushed it all under aching muscles,
sore joints,
pounding head,
pounding feet on the pavement,
long showers to wash it all off.

When we dance we miss steps.
When we reach for each other,
our fingers wrap around not quite enough.

But here he is again,
admiring the new lines of my legs and laughter.

There's no future here;
no picket fence, office door, carpool lane,
four posts guarding me on restless nights.
I don't need a straight line future.
I find I like the curves far better.
