IBM VSS: This is an IBM versatile storage system. It is a group of Raid Arrays that are controled by two F40 R/S 6000's running AIX. The F40's control 8 SCSI ports. Any machine, in theory, can be connected to this device, and see any number of virtual drives that you set up. The system is redundant. Any one of the F40's can fall over, and the system will keep on keepin on. Any one drive per array can be live fire removed or inserted. At ~350,000 us dollars, at 400 gigs, it aint cheap!
