The Japan Series is the annual best-of-seven postseason battle between the champions of Japanese Baseball's Central and Pacific leagues to determine which is the best baseball team in Japan. The series pits the power-hitting, power-pitching American-style baseball of the less-regarded Pacific League against the small-ball, finesse pitching style of the more traditional Central League. Tokyo's Yomiuri Giants, Japan's answer to the New York Yankees, have won the most Japan Series titles by a wide margin, with 20 victories in 30 trips, including an astonishing 9 in a row from 1965 through 1973. They are followed, among current teams, by the Seibu Lions (12 titles), the Yakult Swallows (5), the Orix Buffalos and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks (4 each), the Hiroshima Carp and Chiba Lotte Marines (3 each), the Chunichi Dragons, the Yokohama BayStars, and the Nippon Ham Fighters (2 each), and the Hanshin Tigers (1). So far, the Rakuten Eagles have never won a Japan Series. The Central League leads the Pacific League all time in Japan Series victories, 33-25.
