The motto of Clan Tremere, one of the thirteen great vampire clans from White Wolf's World of Darkness roleplaying games. It is said to be one of the proverbs of Tremere himself, and is one of the cornerstones of the clan's philosophy on unlife. Put simply: knowledge does nothing unless it is properly applied by a being of suitable intellect, creativity and drive, and what is the point of having knowledge that is not put to use? And if one is to put knowledge to use, is there any reason not to use that knowledge to create circumstances which are maximally favorable to one's self? Thus, knowledge is a means, not an end. Research is all well and good, but largely meaningless without practical application.
