Originally used to describe the action of vaccines and antibiotics to seek out and destroy an elusive enemy. Among engineers this has become a derogatory term referring to the quick fix which will fix everything and make the world a better place. PHB and marketing types are always sure such a fix exist, and act as though not finding it is evidence of engineers' incompetence, but the engineers who have to deal with reality know that such fixes very rarely exist.
