The ghost ship Mary Celeste was found adrift and abandoned at sea on December 3rd, 1872. The Spanish brigantine Dei Gratia found her weaving erratically across the sea. They drew up and boarded to discover that the crew had disappeared without a trace, leaving no indication as to why they left the ship. The capain's log was complete up to November 25th and held no sign of trouble. There were no signs of any damage, any storm, mutiny or any disaster. Crew clothes were neatly folded. Breakfast lay prepared and (legend says} partly consumed. No one ever solved the mystery of her vanished crew.
Another curiosity: she'd made 800 km in the 10 days since the last log entry and chart position. Unmanned and rigged for sail, this is all but impossible.
Usually referred to as the "Marie Celeste" her bows actually read Mary Celeste due to an error made by the signwriter who lettered it.
