Mathnet

A wonderful Dragnet clone on the 80's educational TV show Square One. Relied on math to solve mysteries. Featured such lovable characters as the parrot who repeated the Fibonacci sequence. "One, one, two, three, FIVE! Eureka!" Almost as good as Mathman.

Ran for several years. The male lead was always Frankly, and his female counterpart, redone to accomidate actress changes, was Monday in some seasons, and Tuesday in others. Suprisingly educational for something so entertaining. Most episodes were quite interesting, but tended to be slightly predictable and run together in a large blur after some years. The parrot sequence was one of the most memorable; also the episode in which Monday was in some form of cast that prevented her from leaving the apartment, so this case was, literally, out the window. For years *the* highlight of my afternoon after a tough day of gradeschool. I spent many hours with one friend in specific debating the various merits of Monday and Tuesday, and who was the better mathcop. I think we decided Monday won -_-

Both of the above writeups are excellent, though I do have a bit to add. The segment (which, incidentally, was one of my absolute favorite programs ever) was particularly memorable for its dramatic intro spiel, a loose take-off of Dragnet. Of course, seeing Monday and Friday whip calculators out of shoulder holsters was also quite memorable... The Mathnet theme, to the tune of the 'Dragnet' theme, is:

The story you are about to see is a fib - but it's short.
The names are made up, but the problems are real.
Mathnet, the documented drama of an actual crime.
For the next 60 minutes, in cooperation with CTW,
you will travel step-by-step on the side of the law through an actual case, from beginning to end.
From crime to punishment, Mathnet is the story of your mathematicians in action.
