I buy my groceries at the Star Market in Central Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. This is relevant, because the last time I was there, I happened to notice the signs on the express lanes:
12 Items or Fewer
I am not making this up. Some of them say "8 Items", though.
I'd prefer "12 or Fewer Items" myself -- or best of all, "Twelve or Fewer Items", but never mind that.
A number of the jokes in Infinite Jest are exaggerations of, or elaborations on, real stuff that's quite normal 'round these parts.
