Myron Magnet

(person) by LadySun (2.7 mon) (print)   ?   1 C! I like it! Wed Nov 07 2001 at 19:48:12

author, (1944- ). Myron Magnet received B.A.s from Columbia University and Cambridge University in 1966 and 1968, respectively. He received an M.A. from Cambridge in 1972, and a Ph.D. in Victorian literature from Columbia (1973*); he later held a professorship in the English department at Columbia. In 1980, he began working for Fortune magazine, eventually coming to sit on the board of editors for several years. He now edits the City Journal, the urban affairs magazine from the Manhattan Institute, and lives on the Upper West Side.

Most importantly, Magnet is known for his books and articles; over 50 of his articles have appeared in such magazines as Fortune, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and his own City Journal. His work focuses on the social impact of economic change and economic diversity, though he has also written about corporate management, intellectual history, and literature.

His ideas that the changes in the values of the upper and middle classes during the 1960's are to blame for the current attitudes of the lower class can be seen in his book The Dream and the Nightmare (1993, Myron, William & Co., publishers). This book was hailed by George W. Bush as "the most important book" he'd ever read (after the Bible), and as the inspiration for the so-called "compassionate conservativism" he instilled in his campaign and in his presidency*cough*. Dubya actually met Magnet in 1998 and thanked him for the impact he had on his campaign for governor of Texas.
