This album was released along with Passion after the release of Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation of Christ. It contains fourteen traditional Middle Eastern and East African pieces which served as the inspiration for Peter Gabriel's soundtrack to the film.

It is worth noting that several of these musicians continued to work with Peter on his album US, and beyond, Shankar, the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and Fatala especially. Passion Sources happens to be only the second release on the RealWorld label.
jasonm informs me that the original pressing of Passion Sources was limited to 6000 copies, and it took him 6 months to find one on release.
