Paua (pronounced "PAA-wa") is a shellfish, native to New Zealand and found extensively around the rockier parts of the coast.

Related to abalone, paua is also used for jewelry, and many tourist items that nobody in their right mind would call jewelry.

Like its smaller cousin, the paua is excellent eating, often ground up and mixed in a batter to make paua fritters.
