Pausanias was a Greek medical doctor who, around AD 150, wrote 10 volumes about everything worth seeing in ancient Greece, for the sake of wealthy Romans. These are the first known travel guidebooks. It was using the clues in these books that Heinrich Schliemann discovered the pre-historic monuments of Mycenae on mainland Greece.
