Penn has a reputation for being a hothead, due to the incident with the photographer and because he served 32 days in jail in 1987 for punching an extra.

(I couldn't find details on the photographer incident anywhere, but the popular version is that some paparazzi took a picture without asking, and Penn punched him. There may have been some sort of lawsuit - if anyone knows the whole story, elaboration would be appreciated.)
