Shellcodes are CPU instructions generally written in assembler for specific processor platforms. They are commonly associated with buffer overflow exploits, since the shellcode is copied into a region of memory, and then executed by the processor after certain registers are overwritten. Detection of shellcode usage over the network can be performed by such applications as snort and Network Flight Recorder.
