   The Panhandle is generally characterized by a dry but fertile climate, oil rigs, barbed-wire fences, tumbleweeds, Cattle, and Ranches. When folks think of 'Old Western' movies, this is usually what comes to mind. South and West Texas are similar to the Panhandle, but have hills and mountains every now and again. The Central Plains are fertile grasslands, mostly fed by the Brazos, Guadalupe and Colorado rivers. East Texas is predominantly pinewood forests, similar to what you'd find in Northern Louisiana and Tennessee. Non-coniferous forests ripple through the rolling grasslands of North Texas, with a striking decline in annual rainfall in the western portions.

   Culturally, Texas is as varied as its landscapes. Partially because Texas used to belong to Mexico, and partially due to proximity, Mexico plays a large part in shaping Southern and Western Texas culture. If you're going to be spending any considerable amount of time in those parts, it's best to have a passing knowledge of Spanish. The pace of life in Eastern Texas is as laid back as what you'd find in Louisiana, whereas North and Central Texas are much faster.
