The children are all crying in their pens

(idea) by drummergrrl Wed Jan 24 2001 at 17:57:43

the house is dark.
Their bottoms hurt.
Another one, a free one, comes to the edge of the pen and peers in.
He reaches out and touches one of the girls.
There isn't anything to be done.
He, the free one begins to cry too.
Where is the mother?

There is no one there.

title taken from a line in one of Anne Saxton's poems. Poetry by me.
