The
Truce of
God was the
medieval Catholic Church's attempt to stop bored
knights from picking
fights with each other and tearing up
Europe so badly that
crops couldn't be planted and harvested and such. It was in effect in different parts of Europe during the 11th and 12th centuries: one was not allowed to fight during
Lent, on certain
saints' days, and any week between
Wednesday evening and
Monday morning, leaving at most three days a week for the knights to fight and the rest of the week for
peasants to feel fairly safe in the
fields.
