Old School
San Francisco journalist. Editor of seminal New Left magazine
Ramparts from 1964 to 1968(?). Co-editor of
Scanlan's sporting magazine, author of various books, the most entertaining of which is
If You Have a Lemon, Make Lemonade, a loose memoir of his days at
Ramparts and his misadventures with sixties figures like
Eldridge Cleaver and
Hunter S. Thompson. Formerly a columnist for the
San Francisco Chronicle and
Examiner. Drinks plenty. Currently writes a
column for the SF
Independent that, while usually sloppy, underreported and marred by political biases, is entertaining. Reportedly, Hinckle will take some sort of high-level editorial position with the Ted Fang-owned
Examiner, but what he will be doing there remains unclear. More information available at: http://www.zpub.com/sf/hinckle.html
